Talk Back: Protecting Places

A number of you have been gratified by our work to preserve wildlife habitat through conservation easements. Here’s what one reader experienced, right in her own backyard:

I thoroughly enjoyed your blog on Saving Lives by Saving Land.  I have a few bird feeders and a hummingbird feeder in the yard and you would not believe all the creatures that come and enjoy the feed!  Squirrels, chipmunks, hummingbirds, purple finches, sparrows just to name a few.  If everyone would put just one or two feeders in their yards you’d be amazed at the activity that abounds.  I just love watching them in the morning, they truly do deserve their space.  Also, thank you Wayne and the entire HSUS staff for everything you do for all the animals.  I really hope and pray that one day all animals will have peace and harmony like they deserve! —Karen Wagner

My love for animals is the main reason I became interested in saving the environment. If the wildlife lose their habitat trying to protect them is pretty much useless. —Barbara

I think you’re onto something, Barbara. Animals need safe spaces to thrive, just like humans. We can all make a meaningful difference simply by protecting and preserving those spaces.

It’s so wonderful to know there are still relatively pristine areas in this country for wildlife to enjoy. —Tracy

Many of you are excited about California’s Proposition 2, a measure that would improve the lives of 20 million animals on factory farms.

Californians have this unique opportunity, to once again be at the vanguard of common sense, civility, and compassion.  The entire country will be watching what this honorable state does with this chance to make a difference … —Peter

And there were some of you who just wanted to pass along a note of solidarity. I say, thanks to you, for all your support.

I read your website everyday, and although the Humane Society isn’t the only animal organization I contribute to…I must say thank God for all of those committed to saving these abused and neglected angels! God bless for all your efforts. —Marcy Becker
