Today, Post Holdings and its subsidiary Michael Foods—one of the world’s largest egg companies, and perhaps the largest egg supplier for America’s restaurant industry—announced progress toward a cage-free future. The HSUS welcomes the company’s announcement as an important step forward.
“Our customers are increasingly requesting cage-free eggs,” said Jim Dwyer, Michael Foods’ president and CEO. “We are actively working with our customers and suppliers to transition to cage-free housing to anticipate demand.”
It’s a transition that brings with it a brighter future for hens—a future that both consumers and the largest food companies support: McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Jack in the Box, Starbucks, Kellogg’s, General Mills, TGI Fridays, Panera Bread, Sodexo, Aramark, Unilever, Compass Group, and others all have timelines for shifting to cage-free eggs; and other major producers, like Rembrandt Foods, have announced that cage-free will become their new standard of production.
We look forward to continuing our work with Post, Michael Foods, and the rest of the industry to bring about this new day for hens as quickly as possible, and to take further steps in the journey away from cages.
We’re clearly on the path toward a more humane food supply and a more humane society. The end of the cage confinement era is coming into sharper focus with each passing week.
