Over the weekend, I said goodbye to an old friend: my car, a 2001 Prius. She carried me to and from work every day for nearly two decades, occasionally ferrying animals I’d rescued from the streets of the District of Columbia and at other times bringing several foster-fails to my home to join my family.

So when it came time to part ways, I couldn’t think of a better way to say goodbye than by donating my car to the Humane Society of the United States’ Humane Cars program, where she could perform one last service for animals.

The Humane Cars program makes it possible for anyone with an old or unused car to support our lifesaving mission with a donation that doesn’t involve writing a check or clicking on a donate button. Today, I want to share details about this and other programs designed to let your lifestyle choices speak to your desire to help all animals:

Humane Cars:

Our vehicle donation program HumaneCars.org accepts cars, trucks, motor homes and motorcycles. Donating a car, as I learned, was simple, fast and free. Start by calling 1-833-277-7610 or filling out the submission form on our website . Answer just a few questions and schedule a free pickup.

Facebook Birthday Fundraiser

If you have a Facebook account, you can raise money for the cause by setting up a birthday fundraiser. Setting up a fundraiser is easy—follow the instructions here—and choose the Humane Society of the United States as your charity.

Your actual donations are vital to our work and we welcome them. But there are many more ways you can help animals, including volunteering and signing up for our action alerts, among others.
