Breaking: Dogs who were raised for meat arrive in the U.S. to find homes

By on May 27, 2021 with 415 Comments

Early this morning, 171 dogs from South Korean dog meat farms landed at Dulles International Airport to start new lives, and on this first day of their bright futures, I am reminded of how critical our day-to-day work is.

Every time Humane Society International shuts down a dog meat farm it has a reverberating positive impact even beyond those dogs being rescued. But this work is also extremely difficult, especially in the time of COVID-19. That our rescuers figured out how to close farms and save these dogs during a global pandemic, on top of the usual difficulties — witnessing of the realities at the dog meat farms of South Korea — is nothing short of extraordinary.

Jean Chung Empty cages after the dogs were rescued at a former dog meat farm in Yongin, South Korea.

Rows and rows of wire cages, containing dog after dog after dog. Those who are strong enough, stand up and wag their tails whenever anyone walks by; those who aren’t remain huddled in the corners of their cages, skeletal and starving. These are just some of the memories that comes back to me from the times I’ve been at these farms. Beyond the visual memories — and perhaps more haunting — is what I have heard: Silence punctured by whimpers and intermittent barks, almost shrill with need, yet somehow, at the same time, hopeless, as if the dogs calling out know they have nothing to do but wait for their short lives to be over, slumped against the wire walls of their cages. Memories like these aren’t easy for our rescuers to bear, no matter how many dogs we rescue from the dog meat trade.

Working with our remarkable Korean partners to end the practice of dog farming in South Korea is not just saving lives, but also helping to bring dogs into view as loving and loyal companions, while giving willing farmers alternative ways to make a living. Korean dog farmers who want to leave the dog meat industry work with HSI to coordinate the rescue of dogs they raised and transition to more humane and profitable livelihoods. It’s a particularly powerful moment when the emptied cages are demolished, ensuring that no animals will suffer on the farms again and signaling a new future for the farmers. Plus, there’s a growing movement within the country to see former meat farm dogs as adoptable.

Jean Chung Nara Kim, campaign manager of HSI Korea, gently comforts a dog before coaxing him out of his cage.

Rescuing dogs from the dog meat trade is, of course, complicated in the time of a pandemic. All the farm closures were conducted under COVID-19 health and safety restrictions. A veterinarian tests the dogs for the H3N2 virus (“canine influenza”) and the dogs also get vaccinated for a range of diseases. HSI then quarantines the dogs for at least 30 days before their flight.

As today marks the start of whole new lives for our 171 survivors of the dog meat trade, I feel hope knowing that they all were saved from painful slaughter and certain death. I know that each one of those caged dogs has the potential to be the loving, caring member of the family that my dog, Lilly, is. And soon they will have that opportunity.

Jean Chung Teams from South Korean NGOs helped to rescue the dogs who just arrived in the U.S. to seek homes.

First, the pups rest and recover at our temporary shelter site in Maryland where they will receive veterinary care, assessment and rehabilitation before placing them with our shelter and rescue partners, who will place them in loving homes in the U.S. and Canada.

It’s a really good day for these dogs and for people who care about making the world a kinder, more humane place. There’s a moment from some of the footage shot during the recent dog farm rescue that now sticks in my memory as a symbol of hope and progress. A wire door of a dog’s cage opens, and one of our rescuers climbs inside. She sits with the dog, stroking his head and ears, telling him that it’s all going to be alright, that the worst is over. And once the dog has calmed down enough, she coaxes the dog out of the cage, which is the only world these dogs have ever known — until now.

We must continue to suppot organizations that work to stop these horrific inhumane atrocities on animals. If I was as wealthy as Bill Gates I’d spend every last dollar on rescuing all abused animals around the globe and shut down the markets that perpetuate the inhumanity towards them, especially the dog meat farms. Every concerned person from around the world needs to act in some way, either monetarily and/or through advocacy. Thank you to the heroes who are rescuing them!

I pray that all the dogs rescued get adopted, really fast, to a truly loving family. Dogs give unconditional love to us and we should give the same in return to them.

It’s awesome that these fur babies are being saved from human consumption but there’s another problem if anyone care about another group of fur babies, guinea pigs are being put on the plate now and that’s very alarming to me these cute fur babies are being eaten now because of some large food organizations say that it’s okay to eat these cute babies. I just want to make sure the humane society is aware of this issue. The guinea pigs will need your help soon. Everything isn’t meant to be food.

Like we don’t have enough stray and unwanted animals in the US. You go thru the third degree to adopt one. Then the price $$. Kennels are over run. Why ??

  105. tammy lyn thoman says:

So the USA makes the rules for all other countries?? China boils live chicks in their eggs and calls it balut….so we slaughter animals daily…we consume many forms of meat…we eat rabbit.. squirrel..we hunt deer….I’m just not sure I understand why it’s wrong in that country to eat dog

  106. Gypsy Rose says:

People are going to eat what they can.

This is horrifying to see animals treated this way… there such a gift from God they’re created and, they have a beating heart… I commend this woman for helping these animals… we’ve rescued a shelter animal and it’s enriched our lives so much… this has to stop! It would be great if someone could teach them tilapia farming. They get tiny fish, you feed them one time with something like dogfood. They are scavengers – eat their droppings and algae. When they are full size, drain the water and they have plenty of fish to sell or eat.

The hypocrisy here has no limits. I wonder how many people involved in this are vegan, because they SHOULD.

As a vegan, I see no difference in dog, pig, cattle or chicken farms. You should try and think about it.

I fear many will adopt these animals only to leave them in the yard since they don’t act like the dogs you normally see. Give them space and time to get results.

My only thought on this matter is that the people in Korea have been eating dog forever. Thank you. I heard of this practice. awhile ago and couldn’t understand why I didn’t hear more outrage and/or rescue. Even most meat eaters wouldn’t condone eating dog. Thank you for your work.

  278. John says:

I witnessed these dog farms in persom while in Korea. Sad.

  279. Timothy Calvert says:

I don’t get it. The WORLD is Not America. Other cultures, taboos, sources of protein, etc. The U.S. needs to quit playing nursemaid to the world and fix its’ own issues. Its counter intuitive to clean your neighbor’s house while your own is in disarray. “We The Sheeple….”

  280. Tara A Polukort says:

Shut them all down. The inhumane slaughter of these dogs is unbearable.

  281. Vernon k. Zoller says:

I hope and pray that we can end this senseless slaughter of these innocent and beautiful creatures. All life is sacred, we must do better as a species to acknowledge that fact.I would gladly give up a portion of my meat intake if it meant saving just one of these dogs. They are loving and intelligent and need our protection and care.

5 years ago the most amazing thing happened to me. I met Tundra, my Korean Jindo/Akita mix. He came from one of those farms.

The thought of him enduring life in one of those cages waiting to be brutally slaughtered rips my heart out.

He is my love. My heart. I would take a bullet for him.

  284. Stacey says:

I am an animal lover and I am so glad that she rescued these dogs what can we do to stop them from putting them in this farm and slaughtering them for me there has got to be something that people can do

  285. Angela Bolin says:

I am SO THANKFUL for people like yourselves to go out and rescue these fur babies. Not even one deserved to be held there for what was their destination. And now that they are free from that awful situation, my whole self from inside to the outside just cries with joy for every single baby . I never call them dogs because to me they are as much a person and friend as we call them ” A MAN’S BEST FRIEND ” . I want to thank you ALL there and the invovled ,with ALL MY HEART .THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING THERE FOR THEM .

May God bless you people every single day of your lives and always keep you in His care. I’m not sure I could handle doing what you do. I have 4 dogs and would have 100 if I could. Let’s pray that someday maybe even in our lifetime, every single “meat” farm what an awful expression, is shut down forever. And that all of God’s creatures, big and small, are treated with dignity and respect. This all starts with the children and their parents who have to teach them to respect animals and to never hurt them. God bless you.

  301. Carlos Duran says:

What if the south Koreans come and try to rescue blind chickens from the tyson plant in the Usa. Not to mention India coming to Texas and rescuing cows. This seems like a waste of resources. I bet by the time this atricle was published thoses cages are full again.

I love dogs, cats, birds. Also pigs, cows, sheep, fish. Is farming dog meat abhorrent because they’re common pets? Why aren’t we horrified at pig, cow, chicken, fish meat farms. Why is there no outrage for eating any animal? Why are cultures who eat dogs looked at cross-eyed; while other animal eaters are accepted. And what’s up w/foie gras?? Torturing geese & calling it a delicacy!!! They seriously need to raid those farms!!

  358. Lequita Twete says:

How do I go about adopting one of these dogs?

  359. Erika Sizemore says:

We adopted one of these boys.
His name was Hamlin when we adopted him from Cincinnati Animal care
This poor boy was one of the saddest sights I had ever seen.
We have renamed him Zeusy boy

Zeus came to us and was absolutely terrified of people could not touch him at all
he would not eat if he was not alone.
This poor baby was soo skinny, his ribs were showing and you can see where the ribs have been broken and healed incorrectly. He was eating his tail (anxiety)

however, 5 months later Zeus has been born again!!!!

he is now thriving and gaining weight, he comes to you wanting attention and head scratchies, he is learning to walk on a leash, and play with toys.
his favorite things to play with are sticks and cardboard boxes lol (he shreds them) but he is learning to play with balls and ropes.
he is now running in the yard with the other dogs instead of hiding in the corner of the yard.
today was the first day he has climbed up on the couch with my husband wanting to be cuddled.

Zeus has come such a long way in such a short amount of time
I am so happy for him, I’m so happy that he is a happy boy and learning how to live his best life as a forever family member.

Zeus is amazing, he puts so much trust into us even after every horrible thing that has been caused by humans

    • Olivia says:

I adopted one of the dogs from this rescue 3 weeks ago today, named River. He was kept there in a crate too small for his growing body (mastiff mix) so his bones grew to accommodate the lack of space and he walks on his pasterns which is part of why it took so long for him to get adopted. He is timid of new noises, new people and water but otherwise very sweet.

  360. Ginger Kelley says:

I adopted one of the 171 dogs in this article. His name is Milou.Thank you Nami Kim and HSI for saving them!!

    • Blog Editor says:

Thank you so much for adopting Milou! We are incredibly grateful for your decision to give him a loving home.
